Accessibility statement for the Lancet Countdown Data Explorer

This accessibility statement applies to the Lancet Countdown Data Explorer at data.lancetcountdown.org and 2026.data.lancetcountdown.org.

This website is run by the Lancet Countdown, hosted by UCL. We want as many people as possible to be able to use it. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • use every chart control, menu and place picker with a keyboard alone
  • see where you are on the page, with a visible focus outline
  • read a written description of every figure
  • download the data behind most indicators
  • stop animation, if your device is set to reduce motion
  • tell series apart without relying on colour alone
  • use the site with a screen reader

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability (mcmw.abilitynet.org.uk).

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • No figure has a data table, and twelve indicators (1.2.4, 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.1.3, 2.2.1, 2.2.2, 2.2.4, 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 3.5.2 and 4.2.2) have no data download, at the indicator authors' request. Each figure has a written description, and on most charts its values can be read out with a keyboard. On the world maps, a keyboard user can find a country with the map's search and see its value, but a screen reader is not told the value, and on the side-by-side maps the search shows the first map's value only. On the ranking charts, a screen reader cannot yet reach the values.
  • The fine-resolution grid maps for indicators 1.2.2, 1.2.3 and 1.2.4 show values for individual grid cells only on pointer hover or tap. Keyboard and screen-reader users get the figure's written description and a summary of the map's scale and units instead.
  • The downloadable data files, most of them Excel files prepared by the indicator teams, have not been checked for accessibility.
  • Figures embedded on other websites work as they do on this site, except the three fine-resolution grid maps, which cannot be embedded. The rest of the page they sit on is the responsibility of that website.

Technical information about this website's accessibility

The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations:

  • Grid-cell values on the maps for indicators 1.2.2, 1.2.3 and 1.2.4 can only be reached with a pointer (WCAG 2.1.1 Keyboard). The written description gives the main findings in an accessible form.
  • The value a world map shows for a country after a search is not announced to screen readers (WCAG 4.1.3 Status Messages). On the side-by-side maps, the search shows the first map's value only, so the second map's values can only be reached with a pointer (WCAG 2.1.1 Keyboard). Each figure's written description gives its main findings.
  • Values on the ranking charts are labels inside the chart's image, so a screen reader cannot reach them (WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content). Each figure's written description gives its main findings.
  • The downloadable data files have not been checked against WCAG 2.2 AA. We plan to review them with the indicator teams for the next report.

Content that's not within the scope of the accessibility regulations:

The editing system used by the Lancet Countdown team to manage the site is a third-party product used only by staff, and is not covered by this statement.

What we're doing to improve accessibility

We'll carry out a manual screen-reader review by the end of November 2026, and review the downloadable data files with the indicator teams before the next report is published.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 22 October 2026. It was last reviewed on 22 October 2026.

This website was tested against WCAG 2.2 AA during development. Automated accessibility checks (axe-core) run on every change against a sample of pages that covers each kind of chart: maps, trends, rankings, small multiples, place pickers and multi-select menus. Automated browser tests check keyboard operation of the chart controls and that keyboard readouts are set up to be announced by screen readers. Page layouts were checked at desktop, tablet and phone widths down to 320 pixels. A manual screen-reader check was carried out on 25 October 2026 by Camille Voirin.
